First-Hand Muay Thai Experience at Lumpinee and Rajadamnern
When we first began training in Muay Thai, watching fights wasn’t immediately presented as part of the experience. As time went on, we found ourselves watching bouts on TV, comfortably seated on our coach, and occasionally attending events organized by the gyms where we trained, cheering on fellow members. Almost every Friday night, we tuned into One Championship federation matches, showcasing incredible athletes from around the world competing at the legendary Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok.
This habit of watching fights on TV sparked a curiosity within us—what would it feel like to experience these events firsthand, to immerse ourselves in the atmosphere and see our favorite athletes compete live?
Our chance came when we decided to travel to Thailand, landing us conveniently in Bangkok, home to two renowned boxing stadiums, Lumpinee and Rajadamnern.
Upon arriving in Bangkok, we opted to stay for a few days before continuing our travels. We chose a hotel near Lumpinee Stadium and secured tickets for the Friday night fights on December 15, 2023. In a similar vein, before departing Thailand, we made our way back to Bangkok. This time, we had the opportunity to enter the Rajadamnern Stadium and watch a fellow Sitjaopho team member compete in a KnockOut Gala at this legendary venue.
Muay Thai Fights-betting/gambling
Betting has been an integral part of Muay Thai in Thailand for many years, adding an exciting layer of engagement for spectators. Traditionally, betting at Muay Thai fights is vocal and visible, with fans shouting odds and bets to each other in the stands, often using hand signals. This practice dates back to when Muay Thai was not only a form of martial art but also a key entertainment at local festivals and events where gambling was a major attraction. Today, despite strict regulations, betting remains a popular and enduring aspect of the Muay Thai experience, reflecting the sport’s vibrant culture and the passion of its followers.
1. Lumpinee Stadium
The Lumpinee Sporting Arena, managed by the Royal Thai Army, stands as a modern symbol of Muay Thai in Bangkok. Following Rajadamnern, it’s the second national stadium in Thailand. Its distinctive dome shape, adorned with numerous lights, makes it instantly recognizable and inviting.
During our visit to Bangkok, we managed to secure VIP tickets to the renowned One Lumpinee Gala on December 15th, featuring top athletes from Thailand and abroad—a special treat for my birthday from my boyfriend. Although we opted for VIP seats, we noticed that the regular tickets also offered excellent views from any angle within the arena. The queue outside was short, allowing us quick entry. The staff inside were exceptionally helpful and friendly, smoothly guiding us to our seats. We also received unique One Championship glowing wristbands as keepsakes.
The event featured nine exhilarating Muay Thai bouts and two MMA fights, complete with stunning knockdowns, remarkable comebacks, and thrilling battles from start to finish. The atmosphere in the stadium was charged with excitement, yet without any disruptive shouting or inappropriate behavior.
Overall, this was a fantastic experience, especially as we often enjoy watching these bouts on TV
2. Rajadamnern Stadium
Rajadamnern Stadium, the world’s first Muay Thai stadium, has been the cornerstone of Muay Thai since its construction by the Thai Government in 1945. It aimed to elevate Muay Thai to the status of Thailand’s national sport. To be recognized as a premier fighter, one must compete in this iconic arena, a true symbol of prestige.
Rajadamnern is not just any venue; it regularly hosts championship bouts and legendary fights, attracting the best fighters from around the world. Top promoters in Thailand compete to have their fighters perform here, making it the ultimate stage for the sport’s elite. In 2022, the stadium underwent renovations to meet modern demands and incorporate technological advancements. Stepping inside, you’re immediately immersed in its charged atmosphere—the fighters, slick with Thai oil, pacing and preparing, trainers offering last-minute advice. When you enter the main stage area, it’s simply breathtaking: the electric atmosphere, the excited crowd, dazzling lights, and large screens that capture and magnify every move in slow motion during round breaks. The space is expansive with plenty of seating, including VIP sections, where colourful lights and music elevate the event, showcasing the glory of this esteemed sport.
Rajadamnern Stadium is a must-visit destination, not only for travelers from around the globe but also for world-renowned celebrities and public figures, such as President Emmanuel Macron, actor James Franco, and heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury, among others.
Without Rajadamnern Stadium, Muay Thai as we know it today would simply not exist. This iconic venue has been fundamental in shaping the sport, setting standards and providing a stage for its evolution into Thailand’s national sport.
We had the unique opportunity to join our friend Jovan from Sweden as part of his team at the Rajadamnern KnockOut fight night. We first met Jovan while training at Sitjaopho in Hua Hin, and he was among the select few granted the honour to compete in this esteemed stadium. The experience deepened as we accessed the backstage area, where fighters prepared for battle, warming up, wrapping their hands, and being rubbed with Thai oil from head to toe—an intimate glimpse into the world behind the scenes.
That night was filled with action, and Jovan excelled, triumphing in a hard-fought three-round match against his opponent. His display of skill, endurance, and mental strength was remarkable. Observing him await his turn, supported by his girlfriend and sister, added a personal touch to the event. Their long-shared history of training together and their mutual support made watching their collective journey all the more inspiring. This personal connection to the fighters added a layer of excitement and emotion to the night, making it a truly unforgettable experience.
While watching the fights, you can also enjoy a selection of food and beverages available at the stadium’s conveniently located bar/café area, just a short walk from the stage. Additionally, at the front of the stadium, there is a merchandise shop where you can find high-quality Muay Thai souvenirs, perfect for commemorating your visit to this legendary venue.
