I often emphasize the beauty of Muay Thai, not only for its global popularity but also for the opportunity to train in every country I visit.
Our desire to return to Madeira was driven by our previous visit, where we fell in love with the enchanting island. Having initiated our Muay Thai journey in 2018 in Bali, we decided to seamlessly blend travel and training on this trip.
Upon researching training options in Madeira, we reached out to Jose, the owner of ADMTM (Associação Desportiva de Muay Thai da Madeira), which translates to the Sporting Association of Muay Thai in Madeira. This association, primarily situated in Camara de Lobos but also hosting classes in the tourist hub of Funchal, piqued our interest.
We were honored to experience training at both distinguished locations of ADMTM – in the scenic setting of Camara de Lobos and at the prestigious Francisco Franco School in Funchal.
Navigating both locales proved to be effortlessly convenient, offering a seamless experience for enthusiasts seeking the enriching journey of Muay Thai.
The training schedules at both sites are thoughtfully curated, catering to individuals at every proficiency level. Whether you’re a novice taking your first steps into the world of Muay Thai or a seasoned practitioner aspiring to elevate your skills, ADMTM provides a welcoming environment that fosters growth and camaraderie.
Established in 2002 by Master Ferdinando Abreu, ADMTM introduced Thai martial arts to Madeira Island, with its headquarters situated in the charming city of Camara de Lobos—a popular tourist destination.
Since 2006, ADMTM has been under the adept leadership of José Abreu, a UMA University graduate in Physical Education, holding distinctions in Muay Thai X Khan and II DAN Kickboxing.
Boasting a diverse community, ADMTM accommodates approximately 150 members, including both genders and enthusiasts visiting the island specifically for training. This eclectic mix contributes to a dynamic and inclusive training environment.
Under the guidance of a first-degree trainer and four instructors/monitors, ADMTM offers classes tailored to various skill levels and age groups. Kids’ classes are conducted separately, ensuring specialized instruction and attention.
Beyond routine training, ADMTM actively engages its members through a spectrum of events, ranging from in-house competitions to ‘levada’ walks and trails across the scenic landscapes of Madeira Island. This multifaceted approach not only enhances skill development but also fosters a sense of community and camaraderie among its members.
Our initial training at Camara de Lobos was a blend of Muay Thai enthusiasts, both novice and experienced, coming together for an engaging session. The gym’s location was easily accessible, and arriving during the kids’ class completion provided us with a chance to explore. The passion for Muay Thai was palpable, showcased by an impressive array of trophies in the reception area and a tempting selection of high-quality training attire available for purchase.
At the gym’s end, a compact ring facilitated sparring sessions and intense training, preparing young talents for upcoming tournaments. During my initial training, engaging in pad work with the gym owner, Jose, proved both intense and immensely rewarding, offering a valuable gauge of my cardio and strength post a training hiatus.
The class further segmented participants, with beginners receiving specialized coaching on basic techniques, while more experienced individuals engaged in pairs, practicing drills and holding pads. Commencing with a rigorous warm-up of around a hundred bag kicks per leg, the structured discipline proved invaluable for quick learning.
A similar structure awaited at the Francisco Franco School in Funchal, characterized by a focus on kicks, drills, designated sparring days, and separate sessions for clinching—a vital aspect often overlooked in training. Witnessing the progress of young talents, some representing the country in international tournaments and securing medals, underscored the dedication of the younger generation.
In summary, the training experience at ADMTM was among the finest. The welcoming atmosphere, expert coaches, and flexible training options at various days and locations contribute to its status as a top-notch gym. If you find yourself in Madeira, a visit to ADMTM is a must.
.Whether you’re new to Muay Thai or a seasoned enthusiast, it promises an opportunity to fall in love with the sport or push your limits to new sweat-inducing heights. In the backdrop of Madeira’s unparalleled beauty, an ADMTM session adds a unique and invigorating dimension to your visit. So, if you haven’t already, make sure to immerse yourself in the world of Muay Thai at ADMTM—you won’t regret it! 😊

A heartfelt thank you to Jose and Marie for the incredible experience at ADMTM and beyond. Your private Muay Thai classes were not just workouts, but ways of pushing our limits. The private sessions with Jose, particularly the intense pad work, were both challenging and rewarding, giving us valuable insights into our strengths and areas for improvement.
Moreover, your generosity extended beyond the gym as you graciously showed us around Madeira, sharing its beauty and unique charm. Also, your kindness in introducing us to your family and inviting us on a memorable Levada walk enriched our Madeira experience, creating lasting memories.
Thank you for opening your hearts, homes, and gym to us. It was an unforgettable journey, and we are grateful for the camaraderie, laughter, and lessons learned. Until our paths cross again, obrigado from the depths of our hearts. 🙏🌟
