Exploring Ninh Binh
During our two-month adventure in Vietnam, we were eager to step beyond the busy streets of Hanoi and experience the country’s serene countryside. A day trip to Ninh Binh, organized through Viator, gave us exactly that—a full-day journey through history, stunning landscapes, and local culture, leaving us in awe of the beauty of Vietnam’s rural life. In just one day, we traveled from Hanoi’s bustling Old Quarters to the peaceful temples, rivers, and rice paddies of Ninh Binh, creating memories that still resonate.
This organized trip took care of all the details, from a friendly driver and an engaging guide to all logistics. We were able to simply enjoy the scenery, learn about Vietnam’s rich history, and immerse ourselves in experiences like biking along quiet roads and boating through magical caves. Here’s how our incredible day in Ninh Binh unfolded.
From Hanoi to Hoa Lu
Our day began at dawn as we made our way to the Opera House in Hanoi’s Old Quarters, where a small bus picked us up. We joined a small group of fellow travelers, met our guide, and settled in for the journey. Excitement filled the air as we headed south, passing rural scenes that slowly took us away from Hanoi’s cityscape.
Our first stop was Hoa Lu, a site that once served as Vietnam’s capital during the 10th century. Upon arriving, we made our way to the Temple of Đinh Tiên Hoàng. The temple itself is a tribute to Emperor Đinh Tiên Hoàng, who played a vital role in uniting the country. Built with deep respect for both history and feng shui principles, the temple stands with a river at its front and a mountain at its back. This classic “phong thủy” style reflects Vietnamese architectural traditions, adding a layer of cultural richness to the experience.
Though it was crowded with other visitors, the temple’s beauty and historical significance made the visit worthwhile. Surrounded by intricate carvings, serene altars, and timeless structures, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of reverence for the place and its historical importance.
Embrace Flexibility and Local Culture in Vietnam
When exploring Vietnam, especially on day trips like the one to Ninh Binh, it’s invaluable to embrace flexibility and keep an open mind. The country’s stunning landscapes, from bustling cities to serene countryside views, often come with unexpected surprises—like spontaneous stops for photo ops or unplanned interactions with locals selling souvenirs. Embracing these moments can make your experience richer. Bring small cash for local purchases, wear comfortable shoes for long walks or climbs, and be prepared for a bit of a crowd at popular spots. Lastly, engage with your guides and locals—they’re often eager to share insights, stories, and cultural tips that can turn your trip into a genuinely unforgettable journey.
Biking Through Ninh Binh’s Countryside
After Hoa Lu, we arrived at the Ninh Binh Mountain Side Homestay and Cafe, where a row of bikes awaited us. This was an unexpected highlight—biking through the peaceful landscapes of Ninh Binh at our own pace. The ride was short, around 30 minutes, but it gave us a perfect taste of the region’s tranquility. We pedaled past fields of vibrant green rice paddies and small villages tucked between limestone cliffs.
This experience provided a refreshing contrast to the lively city atmosphere of Hanoi. With no traffic or city sounds, just the whispers of nature around us, it felt like a rare opportunity to truly soak in the beauty of Vietnam’s countryside. The quiet scenery was perfect for stopping to take photos, capturing the essence of this tranquil region. We cycled alongside winding paths, surrounded by greenery and stunning views, and felt truly connected to this part of Vietnam’s heartland.
Cruising Through Tam Coc’s Scenic Waters
Following a delicious buffet lunch featuring a variety of Vietnamese dishes and plenty of vegan options, we headed to the next part of our journey: the famous boat ride through Tam Coc, a gem of the Tràng An Scenic Landscape Complex. The area is known for its limestone karsts and lush landscapes, making it one of the most breathtaking sites in Vietnam. We boarded a small bamboo boat, just the two of us and our friendly boat driver, who welcomed us with a smile. As we pushed off from the shore, the river unfolded before us like a painting—lush green rice paddies, towering limestone cliffs, and a gentle rhythm of paddling.
What makes the Tam Coc boat trip truly unique is that many of the local boat operators paddle with their feet. Watching our guide skillfully row us down the river using just her legs was an astonishing experience. As we glided through the serene landscape, we passed through three natural caves, each one presenting an otherworldly experience. Inside the caves, the air turned cool and damp, with hanging stalactites brushing just above our heads. The quiet was only interrupted by the soft splash of oars, enhancing the peaceful atmosphere.
Along the way, we encountered local vendors in boats, offering snacks, drinks, and even small souvenirs. It’s a good idea to bring a bit of cash if you’d like to support these vendors or buy a unique keepsake from the river. The boat ride at Tam Coc was a beautiful experience—a blend of tranquility, natural beauty, and glimpses of local life.
Climbing to New Heights at Hang Mua Peak
Our last major stop was Hang Mua Peak, a climb that’s as challenging as it is rewarding and offers some of the most incredible panoramic views in all of Ninh Binh. Known for its 500-step stone staircase winding up a limestone mountain, Hang Mua provides a bird’s-eye view of the entire Tam Coc region. The climb isn’t for the faint-hearted, especially in the heat of the day, but every step brings a sense of anticipation. The path up is flanked by statues of dragons, ancient-looking and carved into the ridge, adding a mystical touch to the journey.
When we finally reached the top, we were met with an unforgettable sight: sweeping views of the rice paddies below, the gentle river winding through the valley, and rows of towering limestone karsts dotting the horizon. It’s a landscape that feels almost surreal, like stepping into a postcard. Though the peak can be busy with tourists, we found that exploring different viewpoints offered plenty of ways to take in the view without waiting in line. The famous photo spots were crowded, but the mountain offered so many alternative angles to capture the beauty that we didn’t feel like we missed out.
Hang Mua Peak is an ideal spot for travelers who love photography, as every direction presents another breathtaking shot. But beyond the pictures, standing at the summit feels like an accomplishment in itself, especially after the challenging climb. We took a few minutes just to sit, breathe, and soak up the view. The climb can be tiring, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and take your time ascending. For us, the journey up Hang Mua Peak was a perfect way to end our day in Ninh Binh—one last stunning view that left us feeling grateful and in awe of Vietnam’s natural beauty.
